Linda Jean Campbell
Funeral
services for Linda Jean Campbell,
infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George
H. Campbell, were conducted by the
Rev. Seth Hester yesterday afternoon
at 3:30 o'clock at the graveside in
Reedy River Baptist Church cemetery.
The child died Monday night at
the home at Grove Station.
In addition to her parents,
she is survived by one brother, David
Campbell, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Homer Darnell of Greenville and Mrs.
Gertrude Evatte of Greenville County.

Luther A. Capell
Luther
Anderson Capell, 75, who lived in the
Travelers Rest area near Reedy River
Baptist church, was struck and killed
by a passing automobile Sunday morning
while crossing the Buncombe road south
of Travelers Rest.
State Highway Patrolman J.A.
Preacher said that Mr. Capell was
walking along the road on the left
side when a neighbor, C.E. Jenkins,
Greenville, route 7, stopped and
offered him a ride.
He said at Mr. Capell halted
and waited for one car to pass, and
that he then was struck by another
machine as he hastened across the
highway to Mr. Jenkins' car.
The office said the driver of
the car that struck Mr. Capell was
listed as Donald Carl Hanauer, 2904
Horlacher avenue, Dayton, O. He said
that Mr. and Mrs. Hanauer were
returning to their home from a
vacation trip.
Coroner J.O. Turner said Mr.
Hanauer is being held under technical
arrest pending an inquest, which will
be held at the courthouse at 10 a.m.
Wednesday.
Mr. Capell was the 39th person
to die as the result of traffic
accidents in Greenville county this
year and the 87th to die from other
than natural causes.
He was a native of Greenville
county, a son of the late James
William and Licenia Davis Capell. His
wife, Mrs. Sarah Marchbanks Capell,
died several years ago.
Funeral services will be held
Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Reedy River
Baptist church, conducted by the Rev.
S.P. Hester and the Rev. E.P. Sauls,
with interment in the family plot in
the adjoining cemetery.
Active pallbearers, who are
asked to meet at the home of Mrs. E.R.
Hawkins at 2:15 p.m., will be Luther
Capell, Earl Capell, the Rev. B.F.
Hawkins, Edward Hawkins, Vance Stepp
and Perry Vaughn.
The honorary escort will meet
at the church at 2:50 o'clock and will
be composed of deacons of Reedy River
Baptist church together with Rhett
Martin, Kirk Martin, B.F. Edwards,
John Bridwell, Gary Drummond and
General Wade.
At 5 p.m. today the body was
to be carried from the Mackey Mortuary
to the home of Mrs. E.R. Hawkins in
the Berea community to await the hour
of service.
Mr. Capell is survived by two
sons and two daughters, the Rev. P.F.
Capell of Seneca, W.M. Capell of
Hendersonville, N.C., Mrs. E.R.
Hawkins of the Berea community and
Mrs. R.E. Hawkins of Travelers Rest;
two brothers, O.L. Capell of
Knoxville, Tenn., and W.H. Capell of
Hampton, Va., two sisters, Mrs. Dora
Foster of Laurens and Mrs. Addie Capps
of Piedmont, one half-sister, Mrs.
Mary Duncan of Greenville, and 19
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the
Forrestville Baptist church but
attended the Reedy River Baptist
church near his home.

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C., July
24 _ Mrs. Sarah Marchbanks Capell, 72,
a native of Greenville county, S.C.,
but a resident of Henderson county for
a number of years, died early this
morning at her home in the Clear Creek
section.
The deceased was the
daughter of the late Jefferson M. and
Hester Banks Marchbanks. She is
survived by her husband, Luther
Anderson Capell, two sons, Rev. P.F.
Capell and W. Mack Capell, two
daughters, Mrs. E.R. Hawkins and Mrs.
Rex Hawkins; one brother, J.S.
Marchbanks; one sister, Mrs. Hester
Murphy. Funeral services will be
conducted Sunday afternoon at 4
o'clock at the Reedy River Baptist
church in Greenville county, by Rev.
C.L. Norman, and burial will be in the
church cemetery.

Mrs. Ellen Casey
Mrs. Ellen Marchbanks Casey,
92, of Travelers Rest, Rt. 1, wife of
the late W. Furman Casey, died in a
Greenville hospital yesterday at 9:50
a.m. following an illness of four
weeks.
Mrs. Casey was born in
Pickens County but from an early age
had made her home in Greenville
County. her parents were the late John
and Mary Ferguson Marchbanks.
She was a member of Reedy
River Baptist Church.
Mrs. Casey was the last
member of her immediate family and is
survived by a number of nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Reedy
River Baptist Church by the Rev. Seth
P. Hester, assisted by the Rev. S.W.
Jolly. Interment will be in the family
plot in the adjoining cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bruce
Burns, David Wynn, Roy Burns, W.A.
Prater, David Marchbanks and Jack
Marchbanks.
Composing the honorary escort
will be the members of the Mothers
Class of Reedy River Church.
The body is at the home. It

W.F. Casey
William
Furman Casey, well known and highly
respected farmer of Travelers Rest
section, died at the City Hospital
here on Tuesday night after several
month's illness.
Mr. Casey was 51 years of age
and was a native born citizen of
Greenville.
He was a member of Reedy
River Baptist church near his home and
of Cooper Lodge No. 282 A.F.M. His
wife survives him.
Funeral services for Mr.
Casey will be held from Reedy River
Baptist church at 3 o'clock this
afternoon. The Rev. F.K. Pool will
conduct the services and the interment
will be made in the family plot in the
church cemetery. Members of the
Masonic fraternity from Cooper lodge
will have charge of the services at
the graveside.

A native of Greenville,
daughter of the late George M. and

veteran of World War II.

Mrs. Janie Hawkins Childers,
77, widow of J. D. Childers Sr., died
at her residence at 10:55 p.m.
Saturday following three years
declining health and two weeks serious
illness.
She was a native of Greenville
County, a daughter of the late Butler
and Mary Page Hawkins and had lived
all her life here.
She was a member of Reedy River
Baptist Church, a charter member of
the Extension Department of the Sunday
School, was for many years a teacher
in the Sunday school, and a member of
the WMU.
Her husband died some years
ago.
She is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Marie C. Pace; two
sons, Joe Childers and J.D. Childers
Jr., all of Greenville; two sisters,
Mrs. Hattie Rainey, Rt. 5, Mrs. Bertie
Pirkle, Rt. 4, Taylors; three
brothers, J.G. Hawkins of Greenville,
D.W. Hawkins and F.H. Hawkins, both of
Taylors; four grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
conducted today at 4 p.m. at Reedy
River Baptist Church by Rev. S.P.

For 30 years, before his
retirement, Mr. Childers was a
Greenville County tax assessor.
He was a member of Reedy River
Baptist Church and the Men's Bible
Class, and was a former deacon and
Sunday School superintendent.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Alice League Childers; two daughters,
Mrs. Inez C. Jones of Clemson and Mrs.
Edith C. West of Anderson; one son,
Guy B. Childers of Greenville; one
brother, J. C. Childers of Greenville,

Miss Annie Clark
Miss
Annie Clark, 57, died Saturday night
at the home of her sister, Mrs. Carrie
Patton on the White Horse road, Route
No. 1, Greenville. She had been
seriously ill on three days and her
death comes as a distinct shock to her
friends and relatives.
Miss Clark was born in North
Carolina, a daughter of the late
L.G.R. Clark and Martha McCall Clark.
She had lived with her sister on the
White Horse road for the past four
years, but had been a resident of the
Piedmont section of South Carolina for
50 years.
She attended the Baptist
church.
She is survived by two
sisters, Mrs. Carrie Patton and Mrs.
Arrie Burgess, both of Greenville; one
brother, William T. Clark, Pickens
county.
Funeral services will be held
this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the
Reedy River Baptist church, the
pastor, Rev. Mr. Gardner, officiating,
assisted by the Rev. W.A. Loudermilk.
Interment will be made in the

Joseph Collins
Joseph Collins,
a native of Greenville and widely
known resident of this city, died
yesterday morning at 7:20 o'clock at
the home of W.C. Stewart on Buist
avenue after a short illness at the
age of 75 years.
Mr. Collins was endowed with a
cheerful disposition and was a man of
even temperament, being always in a
cheerful mood, and always having a
kind word for his friends whenever he
met. He was also very well read and
conversant on questions of the day. He
was a member of Reedy River Baptist
church, near Travelers Rest. One
brother survives him, Williams M.
Collins, of Charleston. Two sisters,
Mrs. E.C. Marchbanks and Mrs. Baylis
Batson, preceded him to the grave some
three years ago. The following
gentlemen are his nephews: G.F.
Marchbanks, of Anderson; J.A., B.F.
and W.S. Marchbanks, of this city, and
Smith Batson, city license inspector.
Funeral services will be held at
Reedy River Baptist church, in the
upper section, Saturday afternoon at 3

A daughter of the late Thomas
D. and Hattie Watson Cooper, she was a
native of Travelers Rest but had made
her home in Spartanburg for the past
year.
She was a former resident of
Tigerville, where she taught at North
Greenville Junior College for 37 years
prior to her retirement 5 years ago.
Miss Cooper received her
education in the schools of Travelers
Rest, Furman University, Carson-Newman
College and Duke University.
She was a member of Calvary
Baptist Church in Spartanburg.

Mrs. Joe T. Roe Sr. and Miss Mollie
Cooper of Travelers Rest and Mrs. P.S.
Lyons with whom she made her home; two
brothers, Joe D. Cooper of Travelers
Rest, W.N. Cooper of Greenville and a
number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted today at 4 p.m. at Reedy
River Baptist Church by Rev. Wade
Hale, Dr. M.C. Donnan and Dr. Thomas
L. Neely. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James H.
Brockman, Rev. Joe Vaughn, Rev. Leon
Chandler, Rev. Ruford B. Hodges Jr.,
Rev. S.P. Hester and Rev. Roy Gowan.
The body is at the Mackey
Mortuary but will be placed in the
church at 3 p.m.
The family is at the home of a
sister, Mrs. Joel T. Roe Sr., 34 S.

Cooper
Mrs. Hattie A.
Cooper, wife of Thomas D. Cooper, and
a resident of Bates township in this
county, died at her home near
Travelers Rest yesterday afternoon.
Mrs. Cooper was 58 years of age, and
for forty-three years was a member of
Reedy River Baptist church.
She is survived by her husband
and the following sons and daughters:
Mrs. P.S. Lyons of Spartanburg, Mrs.
Joel T. Roe of Greenville county,
John, Furman and Eugene Cooper of this
city, Misses Blanch and Mollie Cooper

Cooper will be held from the Reedy
River church at Travelers Rest, at 3
o'clock Friday afternoon. The Rev.
H.I. Hester will conduct the services
and the interment will be made in the
family plot.

James Earl Cooper Jr., 75, of
4 Stevens St., Dunean, a retired
employee of Mills Mill, died Tuesday.
Born in Pickens County, a son
of the late James Earl and Lydia
Hendrix Cooper, he was a member of
Reedy River Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Ester Hooper Cooper, a daughter, Mrs.
Frank G. Hawkins of Greenville; a son,
Edwin Earl Cooper of Manchester,
England; three sisters, Mrs. John
Revis of Easley, Mrs. Grace Clardy of
Greenville and Mrs. Ethel Johnson of
Laurens; four brothers, Robert and
Roscoe Cooper of Easley, and Furman
Cooper and Gary Cooper of Greenville;
and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday at Thomas McAfee Funeral
Home, with burial in Reedy River
Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive
friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at
the funeral home.

Mr. Cooper's death occurred at
the home at 12:30 o'clock yesterday
morning and followed two years of
illness. He was a son of the late
Joseph D. and Elizabeth (Roe) Cooper,
and was born and reared in Greenville
county, having lived most of his life
in Travelers Rest. He was in his 73rd
year.
Mr. Cooper was a member of
Travelers Rest Baptist church.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Nannie A. Cooper; two sons, Elmer
L. Cooper and Ernest C. Cooper; two
sisters, Mrs. L.H. Shelton and Mrs.
C.C. Smith, and four grandchildren.
After 11 o'clock Thursday
morning, the body will be at the home
to await the hour of service.

Malissa Cooper
Mrs. Malissa B.
Cooper, the widow of the late J.E.
Cooper, died yesterday at Travelers
Rest. She was 74 years of age. The
survivors are two sons, T.D. Cooper
and J.B. Cooper, and three daughters,
Mrs. Theo E. Watson, Mrs. Sue E. Smith
and Mrs. Ethel Shelton. Mrs. Mollie
Watson, who died 12 years ago, was a
daughter of Mrs. Cooper. A number of
grandchildren also survive Mrs.
Cooper.
The funeral services will be
held at Reedy River Baptist church at
11:30 o'clock. She has been a member
of this church since her childhood
days.
Mrs. Cooper was an estimable
lady. Her fine character has made her
a power for good and her death is a
loss to her community. The bereaved
family have (sic) the sympathy of many
friends.
Before marriage, Mrs. Cooper
was a Miss Roe, of the Tigerville
section.

Mollie June Cooper
TRAVELERS REST _ Mollie June Cooper,
87, of 600 Sulphur Springs Road,
formerly of Travelers Rest, died of
natural causes July 1, 1988.
She retired from Renfrew
Bleachery as a bookkeeper. She was a
member of Travelers Rest First Baptist
Church, where she formerly taught the
Mollie June Cooper Sunday School
Class.
Surviving is here sister, Winnie
Roe of Travelers Rest.
Graveside services: 3 p.m.
Sunday in Reedy River Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Nannie Cooper
Funeral services for Mrs.
Nannie Alice Coster Cooper, 80, former
Greenville resident, but for 10 years
a resident of Travelers Rest, will be
held Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock
at Reedy River Baptist church, of
which she was a member, conducted by
Rev. S.P. Hester and Rev. T.L. Bryson.
Interment will be on the family plot
in the church cemetery.
The following are asked to
meet at the church at 4:20 o'clock to
serve as pallbearers: John Bolin, W.N.
Cooper, Joe Cooper, Leon Smith, Edward
League and Alvin Smith.
Deacons of the church together
with the following, Dr. T.E. Coleman,
Dr. Stanley I. Coleman and Dr. S.R.
Gaston, are asked to meet at the
church at 4:20 o'clock to compose the
honorary escort.
Mrs. Cooper's death followed a
lingering illness. She was bedridden
for 14 years and her death occurred at
9:50 clock Monday morning at her
residence in Travelers Rest. She was a
life-long resident of the county and
city, having been a daughter of the
late Isaac P. and Sarah (Patterson)
Coster.
Mrs. Cooper was the wife of
the late James Roe Cooper, who died on
January 26, 1944.
She is survived by two sons,
Ernest C. Cooper of Greenville and
Elmer L. Cooper of Travelers Rest; one
sister, Mrs. Amelia C. Bolin of
Taylors, and four grandchildren.
Pending the hour of service
the body will remain at Mackey
mortuary.

Thomas D. Cooper
Funeral services
for Thomas D. Cooper, one of the best
known residents of the Travelers Rest
section, whose death occurred at his
home there on Wednesday afternoon at
4:15 o'clock will be held on Friday
afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the Reedy
River Baptist church. The services
will be conducted by his pastor, the
Rev. F. K. Pool, who will be assisted
by the Rev. L. B. White, of Travelers
Rest, and the Rev. J. H. Lackey, and
the interment will be made in the
family plot in the adjoining cemetery.
The following are asked to
serve as the active pallbearers; and
to meet at the residence promptly at
2:40 o'clock: J. M. McKinney, J. N.
Watson, Roy Anderson, James Watson,
Elmer Cooper and Leon Smith.
It is requested that the
following compose the honorary escort,

Mr. Cooper was born and reared
in upper Greenville county, a son of
the late Joseph D. and Malissa Roe
Cooper, and engaged in farming all of
his life. For 25 years he served as
one of the R. F. D. mail carriers out
of Travelers Rest, through which
contact he made countless friends. His
death followed several months of
declining health.
Mr. Cooper had been a member of
the Reedy River Baptist church since
early youth, and had held the offices
of deacon and clerk of the church. He
was a member of Olive Camp Woodmen of
the World, and of the Sandy Flat, No.
103, Lodge of Odd Fellows.
He was twice married, his first
wife, Mrs. Hattie Watson Cooper,
having passed away in 1925.
Mr. Cooper is-survived by, his
wife, Mrs. Lula Nobles Cooper, by six
sons: Oscar R. Cooper, of Waterloo; J.
J. Cooper, of Travelers Rest, T. F.
Cooper, E. B. Cooper, J. D. Cooper and
W. N. Cooper, all of Greenville; and
by the following daughters: Mrs. P. S.
Lyons, of Spartanburg; Mrs. J. T. Roe,
Miss Blanche Cooper and Miss Mollie
June Cooper, all of Travelers Rest and
Miss Harlee Cooper of Tigerville.
One brother, Mr. J. R. Cooper
of Travelers Rest, and two sisters:
Mrs. C. C. Smith and Mrs. W. H.
Shelton, of Travelers Rest, also
survive, in addition to 16
grandchildren.
