Ellen S. Latham
Mrs. Ellen
Summerell Latham, of 201
West Washington Street,
died Saturday, August 9,
1986, following several
days of serious illness.
A native of
Anderson, S.C., she was
the daughter of the late
Frank and Lillie Shaw
Summerell. She had lived
in the Greenville area
most of her life and was
formerly a nurse's aide on
the staff of St. Francis
Community Hospital before
her retirement. Mrs.
Latham was a member of St.
Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving are a
son, The Reverend
Christopher Latham, Pastor
of St. John's Catholic
Church in Summerville,
S.C.; four sisters, Mrs.
Bessie S. Davis, Mrs.
Corrine S. Burdett and
Mrs. Alberta S. Hayes, all
of Greenville, S.C., and
Mrs. Evie S. Southers of
Gainesville, Ga.; and
several nieces and
nephews.
The Mass of
Christian Burial will be
conducted at 7:30 p.m.
Monday at St. Mary's
Catholic Church by the
Reverend Christopher
Latham.
Interment will be
held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at
Reedy River Baptist Church
Cemetery.
The body will be
at the home of her sister,

mother, she is survived by
a sister, Mrs. Patricia B.

predeceased by a son, Joey
Barton.

and four brothers, Vernon
Lawson, Kylesford, Tenn.,

merchant of Travelers Rest
and was a motel owner in

a member of Travelers Rest
First Baptist Church, a
former member of the board
of directors of the
Associated Grocers of
Greenville, and on the
board of directors for the
Bank of Travelers Rest. He
was a former trustee of
the Greenville Hospital
System.
Surviving are his

and a brother, Norwood
League of Greensboro, N.C.

Annie Sue League
Mrs.
Annie Sue League, wife of
L. Roy League. and
prominently connected in
this city, died at 6
o'clock yesterday
afternoon. She had been in
failing health for almost
a year and during the past
few weeks her condition
had steadily become worse.
Mrs. League was a
daughter of Mrs. Alice
Ashmore and the late
Charles L. Ashmore, both
of whom were from
distinguished Greenville
county families. She was
born on October 20. 1901.
She was a devoted
member of Reedy River
Baptist church and was for
many years an active
worker in the Sunday
school. Mrs. League was
interested in all phases
of the church work. She
was a trustee of Reedy
River school for a number
of years.
Because of her
gentle disposition and
pleasing personality Mrs.
League was known and loved
by countless friends
throughout the county.
In addition to her
husband she is survived by
one daughter, Gladys Susan
League and one son,
Lawrence Crayton League.
She is also survived by
her mother, Mrs. Alice
Ashmore: two sisters. Mrs.
F. S. Moody, Jr.. of
Greenville and Mrs. Ferris
Munn, of Greenville; three
brothers. W. Hawkins
Ashmore, of Greenville,
Clyde C. Ashmore. of
Columbia and G. Heyward
Ashmore, of Miami, Fla.
Funeral services
will be held tomorrow
morning at 11 o'clock from
Reedy River Baptist

Greenville for 50 years.
She taught Sunday School
and was Young People's
director and president of
the WMU. She was a member
of Hartsville First

Funeral
services for George
Matthew Anderson League,
widely know resident of
the Reedy River Church
community, and better know
to his many friends as
“Bud” League, were held
this afternoon at the
Reedy River Baptist
Church, conducted by the
Rev. F. K. Pool, and the
interment made in the
family plot of the
adjoining cemetery.
Mr. League was a
lifelong resident of this
county, having been born
in Paris Mountain township
on March 11th, 1858, a son
of the late George League
and Mrs. Louise Ford
League. He was a
progressive farmer, and
was identified with all
matters pertaining to the
uplift of his community,
having served as a trustee
in the Reedy River School,
and having taken an active
interest in the affairs of
his community.
He was a member of
the Reedy River Baptist
Church. Mr. League's
illness was of short
duration, having been ill
for only eight days, and
the end came shortly after
10:30 o'clock Sunday
morning at his home. It is
a source of regret to his
scores of friends that
Mrs. League is confined to
bed by illness at this
time.
In addition to his
wife, Mrs. Hattie Hawkins
League, Mr. League is
survived by seven sons;
Mr. J. A. League, of
Travelers Rest; S.C., Mr.
Crawford C. League, of
Charlotte, N.C.; Mr. L.
Roy League, of Charlotte;

Mrs. League had been In
declining health for a
number of years, and while
her death was not
unexpected her many
friends will be saddened
by her passing.
Mrs. League had lived her
entire life in the
same community.
She was a devoted
member of the Reedy River
Baptist church, and took
an active part in the work
as long as her health
permitted. Mr. League
passed away in 1929.
She is
survived by three
daughters: Mrs. J. A.
Phillips, Mrs. C.
J. Hill and Mrs. L. H.
Childers, all of
this city, and by the

of Travelers Rest; J. B.

James Lawrence League
James
Lawrence, the sixteen
months old son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. L. O. League, died
at the home near Travelers
Rest Monday morning at 5
o'clock. The funeral was
held Wednesday morning at
ten o'clock at the Reedy
River Baptist church,
conducted by the Rev. Mr.
Seago, the pastor.
Lawrence was a bright
lovable little fellow, and
will be sadly missed. The
parents have the sympathy
of a large circle of
friends.

J. L. O. League, member of
the police force since
1920, died of a heart
attack at 7 o'clock this
morning while sitting on
the front porch of his
home at 304 Mulberry
Street.
He was 49 years old,
having been born near
Travelers Rest on July 4,
1887. Before joining the
police force on April 12,
1920, he was a street car
motorman.
In addition to his
patrol duties, he had
served as a traffic
officer. He had just
finished his night shift
when he sat down on the
porch and was stricken
with the sudden attack.
Mr. League, a son of
the late Manning and Lina
Smith League, was a member
of Reedy River Baptist
Church and the Junior
Order, United American
Mechanics.
He is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Mae Hawkins
League, and by one son,
Carroll E. League, of this
city.
He is also survived
by one brother, Frank M.
League, of Greenville.
Funeral services for
Mr. League will be held
Friday afternoon at 3
o'clock at the Reedy River
Baptist Church, conducted
by the Rev. Frank K. Pool,
and the interment will be
made in the adjoining
cemetery.
The honorary
pallbearers will be the
city officials and the
personnel of the police
department. The active

Joe A. League
Joe A. League, widely
known merchant of
Travelers Rest, died in
the Gaston clinic at 7:30
o'clock last night. He had
been in declining health
for the past year, his
condition becoming serious
about two weeks ago.
Mr. League was a
member of an old and
prominent Greenville
county family. His parents
were the late G. M. A. and
Hattie Hawkins League. He
was born near Travelers
Rest on Sept. 11, 1881,
and had spent all of his
life in that community.
Mr. League was
interested in all
community affairs. He was
for more than 12 years a
trustee of the Travelers
Rest school. During this
time Mr. League was
instrumental in having the
new Travelers Rest high
school building erected.
He was a member of
Reedy River Baptist
church, of Cooper Lodge
No. 282, Masonic Order,
and of Olive Camp No. 344,
Woodmen of the World.
Surviving are his
widow, Mrs. Jessie Cox
League, and three sons,
Allen League. of Travelers
Rest, Norwood League, of
Spartanburg and Jesse
League, of Littleton, N.
C. He also leaves three
sisters, Mrs. J. A.

Mr. League was
twice married. His first
wife was the late Annie
Sue Ashmore League, who
died in 1938.

E. B. Lipscombe
E. B. Lipscombe, well know
Greenville County farmer,
died at his home in Paris
Mountain township just off
the new Buncombe road at
4:10 o'clock yesterday
afternoon. He had been in
declining health for the
past several weeks.
Mr. Lipscombe was
born in Cherokee county on
March 16, 1849, a son of
James W. and Jane Strain
Lipscombe. He moved to
Greenville county when a
young man and had been
engaged in farming since
that time.
He is survived by
two sons, James O.
Lipscombe, of Greenville,
and Edgar C. Lipscombe, of
Colorado Springs, Colo.,
and one daughter, Mrs. P.
E. Hudson, of Greenville.
He also leaves 16
grandchildren, 23
great-grandchildren and
one
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services
will be held this
afternoon at 4 o'clock
from Reedy River Baptist
church, conducted by the
pastor, the Rev. Mr.
Loudermilk. Interment will
be in the adjoining
cemetery.

at his home on Love Dr. at
midnight Friday following
several years of declining
health with one week of
serious illness.
He was born in
Walker County, Ga., but
was a lifelong resident of
Greenville County, having
been brought to the
Travelers Rest section at
the age of six weeks. His
parents were the late E.
Bruce and Emily (Garrison)
Lipscomb.
Mr. Lipscomb was
a member of Reedy River
Baptist Church for 69
years, where he served as
a deacon, Sunday School
superintendent and teacher
for many years. He was a
member of Cooper Lodge
282, AFM.
Mr. Lipscomb was
twice married. His first
wife was the former Miss
Lyda Mae Stewart, who died
33 years ago. From this
union four daughters and
three sons survive: Mrs.
Maude L. Dawson,
Greenville; Mrs. Reta L.
Hood, Kirkland, Wash.;
Mrs. Louise L. Melton,
Bremo Bluff, Va.; and Mrs.
Jessie L. Burns, Travelers
Rest; Henry B. Lipscomb,
Gastonia, N.C., J. Edgar
Lipscomb, Greenville and
Johnnie A. Lipscomb,
Travelers Rest.
His second
marriage was to the former
Miss Maggie Garrison, who
died eight years ago.
Also surviving are
one sister, Mrs. Eva L.
Hudson, Greenville 17
grandchildren and 16
great-grandchildren.
The body is at the
home. Stilwell Mortuary is
in charge.

Wednesday. He became ill

26 had surgery at
Hardeeville, S. C. After
entering Greenville
General Hospital Nov. 5,
He underwent three
subsequent operations.
During the past six weeks,
his condition had grown
increasingly more
critical.
He was a member of
Reedy River Baptist Church
and of the Intermediate
Class of the Sunday
School. He had been a
student at Hardeeville
High School at Hardeeville
and Parker High School,
10th grade.
The body is at the
Thomas McAfee Funeral

Mrs. Lida Stewart
Lipscomb, 60, died at the
family home on the
Buncombe Road, in Paris

Mrs. Lipscomb had

Roy “Butch'' Lipscomb
Sgt. E-5
``Butch'' Lipscomb, 21, of
209 Love Drive, was killed
in Vietnam Thursday during
a combat operation.
Born in
Greenville County he was a
son of Johnny and Edna
Jackson Lipscomb of
Travelers Rest. He was a
graduate of Travelers Rest
High School and was
formerly employed by
Southern Bell Telephone
Company. He entered the
U.S. Army in Oct., 1967
and received his basic
training at Ft. Jackson.
He then attended NCO
school and received
advanced training at Ft.
Knox, Ky. For eight months
he had been serving with
Troop G, 211 ACR, US Army
in Vietnam. He was a
member of Reedy River
Baptist Church.
Surviving are
his wife, Mrs. Betty
Whitfield Lipscomb; and
his grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. O.K. Jackson of Ware
Shoals.
The body is
being returned to
Greenville. Funeral
arrangements will be
announced by the Thomas
McAfee Funeral Home.

Emma E Lowe
Mrs. Emma E. Lowe,
well known resident of
this county, passed away
at her home on Smythe
street, near Dunean, at
6:30 o'clock yesterday
morning after an illness
of one year's duration.
Mrs. Lowe was 71
years of age and was a
life-long resident of
Greenville county, where
she has numerous friends.
She was the widow of the
late J.F. Lowe, who
preceded her to the graves
by 11 years. She was a
devoted member of the
Dunean Methodist church.
Surviving her are
one sister, Mrs. Hattie
Buck of Durham, N.C., and
four nephews, W.T. Buck,
of Durham, who was
formerly employed by The
Greenville News, of this
city; George M. Buck, of
Nashville, Tenn.; Arthur
Buck, of Atlanta; and C.W.
McKinzie of Asheville,
N.C.
Funeral services
