Carrie Patton
Carrie Clark Patton, 90, of No. 12 Zarline St., City View, died Monday.
Born in Transylvania, N.C., she was a
Baptist.
Surviving are daughters, Mettie P. Williams
and Carolee P. Boling of Greenville, and Rachel P. Gosnell of
Mauldin; a son, Prue B. Patton of Greenville; eight grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at
Thomas McAfee Funeral Home; burial in Reedy River Baptist Church
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m.
Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family is at the home of a daughter, 10
Zarline St., City View.

Aaron
E. Payne
Aaron E. Payne, widely know farmer of Paris
Mountain township and outstanding citizen of his community, died
at 6:30 o'clock yesterday morning at his home on the White Horse
road, where he had lived for the past 30 years. Mr. Payne had been
in failing health since last May and while his death was not
unexpected, it will cause widespread sorrow among his many
friends. He passed his 84th birthday on November 21. he was born
and reared at Fork Shoals, a son of the late Howard and Hannah
Howard Payne. For some time he lived near Greer, and all of his
life engaged in farming.
Mr. Payne was a devoted member of the Reedy River
Baptist church, and had taken an active part in church work all of
his life.
He was married three times, his first marriage
having been to Miss Leola Ashmore, and his second marriage to Miss
Lizzie McCarter. His third marriage was to Annie Green McCarter,
who survives him.
He is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ellen
Greer, of Chicago, Ill., and by three sons; Henry E. Payne, W.
Arthur Payne, and A. H. Payne, all of Paris Mountain township. One
brother, John H. Payne, of Greer, also survives him, as do 12
grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. W. A.
Loudermilk, pastor of the Reedy River Baptist church, will be held
at church this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, adn the interment will
be made in the adjoining cemetery.
The following persons will serve as the active
pallbearers: Morris Payne, Frank Payne, Rhett Hughes, Jim Greer,
J. Eugene McManaway, and Paul Bayne.
Composing the escort of honor will be Dr. S. R.
Gaston, Joe Greene, Walter Greene, Russell Batson, Perry Batson,
A. L. Eubanks, Joe League, Hawkins Ashmore, Walter Hawkins, C. J.
Hill, Jim Evins, P. R. Long, R. L. Greene and Roy Pace.
Until the funeral hour, the body will remain at
the family home.

Elford E. Phillips
Elford E. Phillips,
farmer of Paris Mountain township and a lifelong resident of
Greenville county , died at his home near the reservoir on the
Buncombe road at 12:15 clock yesterday following four weeks of
illness.
Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Henry T.
and Elizabeth (Hawkins) Phillips, pioneer residents of the county,
and had lived in the same community all of his life.
He was a member of Reedy River Baptist
church.
His wife, Mrs. Hattie Marchbanks Phillips,
survives him, with four sons, Dean, Gilbert, Roy and Alvin
Phillips and five daughters, Mrs. Claude Hawkins, Mrs. Calvin
Jenkins, Mrs. Howard Addis, Mrs. William Hightower and Miss Bertie
Phillips, all of Greenville; four brothers, Jerry, Gus and David
Phillips, all of Greenville, and Tom Phillips of Easley; four
(three?) sisters, Mrs. Vick Stillers, Mrs. Walter Armstrong,
Mrs. Matt P. Hester, also of Greenville, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at
Reedy River Baptist Church on Friday morning at a hour to be
announced later from James F. Mackey and Sons. Pending the
completion of the arrangements the body is at the mortuary.

Hattie Phillips
Mrs. Harriett “Hattie” Marchbanks
Phillips, 72, died at her residence, Davidson Rd., Rt. 7,
Greenville, Sunday at 7 p.m. after a serious illness of three
weeks although she had been in declining health the past year.
Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late
Peter C. and Margaret Collins Marchbanks and was born in
Greenville County on Nov. 22, 1886. She had spent most of her life
in the Reedy River Community but for the past nine years had lived
on Davidson Rd.
She was a member of Reedy River Baptist
Church and the Mothers Bible class of the Sunday School.
Her husband, Elford E. Phillips, died on
Dec. 17, 1947.
Survivors include: 5 daughters, Mrs. Claude
Hawkins of Travelers Rest, Mrs. Calvin Jenkins, Mrs. Howard B.
Addis and Mrs. William K. Hightower, all of Greenville,. and Miss
Birdie (Bertie) Marie Phillips of the home; 3 sons, Gilbert
M. Phillips, Roy L. Phillips and Alvin H. Phillips, all of
Greenville; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Brown of Greenville; one
brother, B. Frank Marchbanks of Greenville; 19 grandchildren and 3
great-grandchildren. A son, Elford Dean Phillips, died On July 5,
1955.
Funeral services will be
conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Seth P. Hester, and Dr. Paul F. Beacham at Reedy River Baptist Church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be in the adjoining
cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Marchbanks,
William Marchbanks, Frank Marchbanks, the Rev. John B. Marchbanks,
Paul Hester and Melvin L. Jarrard.
Honorary escort will be the members
of the Mother's Bible Class of the church Sunday School.
The body is at the home.

Mr. Phillips had been in
declining health for some time, but his condition did not become
critical until a short time before his death. he was dead upon
arrival at a local hospital at 5:30 a.m. Friday.
He was born in Travelers Rest
on March 10, 1888, and was a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth
Hawkins Phillips, both of pioneer families of Greenville County.
Mr. Phillips had lived in the West Gantt Community prior to living
in Greenville. He was a machinist and carpenter and prior to his
retirement was an employe of Dixie-Home Stores.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Lucinda Moody Phillips; two daughters, Miss Violet Phillips and
Mrs. Josephine P. Hambright of the home; one son, Rex. J. Phillips
of Greenville; three brothers, Tom H. Phillips of Easley, B.F.
Phillips of Greenville and J.A. Phillips of Marietta; one sister,
Mrs. Pearl Armstrong of Travelers Rest, and two grandchildren.
Members of the family are at
the home of a son, Rex J. Phillips, 401 Galphin Dr., near Shriners'
Hospital.
The body is at Jones Funeral
Home and will be taken to the church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jerry Phillips
MARIETTA -- Funeral
services for Jerry Phillips, 81, will be conducted at Reedy River
Baptist Church Thursday at 11 a.m. by Rev. S.P. Hester. Burial
will be in the family plot of the church cemetery.
The Men's Bible Class of Reedy River
Baptist Church will serve as honorary escort. Active pallbearers
will be John Armstrong, Earl Phillips, Gilbert Phillips, Alvin
Phillips, Guy Childress, Woodruff League and Edward League.
Mr. Phillips died at a Marietta
hospital yesterday at 10:30 a.m. after a serious illness of two
weeks. He was born in upper Greenville County, the son of the late
Henry T. and Nancy Hawkiness (sic) Phillips. Mr. Phillips
was a retired farmer and lived all of his life in this section.
He was a member of Reedy River
Baptist Church, and a 50-year member of Olive Camp 344, Woodmen of
the World, at Travelers Rest.
Surviving are two sons, Joe A.
Phillips of Marietta and George J. Phillips of Williamston; one
sister, Mrs. Walter Armstrong of Travelers Rest; two brothers,
Thomas H. Phillips of Easley and Doc Phillips of Charlotte, N.C.;
four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
After 3 p.m. Wednesday, the body will
be at the home on Geer Highway, Marietta, and will be placed in
the church at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Lucinda Moody Phillips, 89, of
124 Buist Avenue and Homestead, Florida, widow of James Gus
Phillips, died Friday.
Born in Greenville County, daughter of the late
Frederick S. and Josephine Marchbanks Moody, she was a member of
Central Baptist Church.
Surviving are one son, Rex J. Phillips of
Greenville; two daughters, Josephine P. Bailey of Greenville and
Violet P. McNamee of Homestead, Florida; one brother, Hext P.
Moody of Travelers Rest; one sister, Mrs. C.F. (Aletha) Norton of
Travelers Rest; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at
Reedy River Baptist Church by Rev. Gerald Martin and Rev. S.P.
Hester, with burial in the church cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Reginald J.
Phillips, II, Gilbert Phillips, Calvin Jenkins, Billy Pike, Rainey
Moody, Raymond Moody, Arthur Norton and Alvin Norton.
The body is at the Jones Mortuary where the
family will receive friends from 4 until 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Stella
League Phillips, 70, wife of Jerry A. Phillips, will be conducted
at Reedy River Baptist Church Sunday at 2 p.m., by her pastor, the
Rev. Seth P. Hester and the Rev. E. C. Brown. Interment will be in
the family plot in the adjoining cemetery.
The following nephews will serve as
pallbearers: Gilbert Phillips, Earl Phillips, John Armstrong,
Russell League; Allen League and Woodrow League.
The honorary escort will be composed
of the members of the Ladies Bible Class of Reedy River Church.
They will meet at the church at 1:50 p.m.
Mrs. Phillips died at her home on the
Buncombe Road in the Reedy River section Friday. Although she had
been in declining health for the past 18 months, she was about her
usual duties when stricken suddenly.
She was born and lived her entire
life in the Reedy River Community, a daughter of the late G. M. A.
and Hattie Hawkins League, both members of pioneer Greenville
County families. She was a member of Reedy River Baptist Church
where she actively engaged in all phases of work until her health
failed.

is at the home.

Annie Ola Eaton Pike, 91, of Route 7,
Reedy River Community, widow of T. Earl Pike, died Wednesday.
Born in Greenville County, she was a
member of Reedy River Baptist Church and the Mothers Bible Class.
She and her husband formerly operated Pike's Store, Cotton Gin and
Blacksmith Shop in the Reedy River community and at one time they
supervised the Greenville County Home.
Surviving are a daughter, Thurler
Pike Bull of Greenville; a son, Jesse Pike of Greenville; six
grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six
great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at
Reedy River Baptist Church; burial in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church
at 10 a.m.
The family is at the home of her
daughter, 200 Edwards Road, but will receive friends 7-8 p.m.

Maude Pike
After an illness of 12 days, Mrs. Maud
Edwards Pike, wife of W.C.B. Pike, died yesterday morning at 1:30
o'clock at her home on the Buncombe Road in Paris Mountain
Township. Mrs. Pike was a daughter of the late Garrison Edwards.
Mrs. Pike is survived by her husband, two
small daughters, Mary Sylvina, age 11, and Martha Ann, age 10; by a
sister, Mrs. W.S. Bishop, who lives near Travelers Rest; and by
the following brothers, Henry and Alford Edwards, of Texas,
Garrison Edwards, of Atlanta, and Hayne Edwards, of Travelers
Rest. Mrs. Pike was a member of Enoree Baptist church.
Funeral services are to be held from the
Reedy River Baptist church Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, Rev.
Mr. Jolly officiating.

Ruth Norton Pike, 64, of Route
7, Foothills Road, wife of William W. “Billy'' Pike, died
Saturday.
Born in Greenville County, a
daughter of Alethea Moody Norton and the late Columbus F. Norton,
she was a retired employee of Piedmont Industries and was a member
of Reedy River Baptist Church and the Homemakers Sunday School
Class.
Surviving also are a son, Fred.
D. Pike of Lenoir, N.C., brothers, Arthur F. and Alvin H. Norton
of Greenville and Hugh L. Norton of Greenwood; a sister, Myrtle
Holland of Fountain Inn, and one grandchild.
Services will be at 4:30
p.m. Monday at Reedy River Baptist Church, burial in the church
cemetery.

in the church at 3:30 p.m.

Earle Pike
Funeral services for T. Earle Pike, 53, widely know resident of
this county, who died suddenly yesterday morning at his home on
the Buncombe road near Reedy River church, will be held at 11
o'clock Thursday morning from the Reedy River Baptist church,
conducted by the Rev. Frank K. Poole. The interment will be in the
church cemetery.
Mr. Pike was a well known
farmer and merchant of that section where he had resided
practically all of his life and was trustee of the Reedy river
school. He served as superintendent of the Greenville county home
for a period of 14 years.
Mr. Pike was for many
years an active member of the Reedy River Baptist church and was
treasure of the church at the time of his death. He was a charter
member of the Bald Rock Council, No. 47, Junior Order United
American Mechanics.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Annie Eaton Pike, and three adopted children, Mrs. F.A. Bull and
Mrs. H.P. Moody of Greenville and Jesse Pike of Travelers Rest;
his father, Berry Pike, Travelers Rest, and two sisters, Mrs.
Clyde Hester and Miss Martha Ann Pike, of Travelers Rest.
Funeral arrangements will be
made by Jones-McAfee, funeral directors.

Pike
W. C. B.(Berry) Pike, 88, well known farmer
and merchant of near Travelers Rest, died at his residence
Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock.
During the last 15 months of his life, he was ill a great part of
the time and suffered much, but he bore all with patient
submission.
Mr. Pike was a lifelong resident of
this county, his birthplace being in the Rocky Creek section. For
the past 35 years Mr. Pike had made his home in the Travelers Rest
community. Born and reared on the farm, he took up farming as a
life work, and had achieved much success.
He was a member of Enoree Baptist
church but during the past few years was a faithful attendant of
Reedy River Baptist church. He was also a. member of Cedar Camp
No. 3, Woodmen of the World.
Mr. Pike was twice married, first to
Miss Susan McAlister, then to Miss Maude Edwards, both having
preceded him to the grave by a. number of years. He is survived by
two daughters, Mrs. Douglas Coleman and Mrs. Clyde Hester, of
Travelers Rest; three half-sisters, Mrs. Addie Marchbanks and Mrs.
Dora Miller, of Greenville and Mrs. Nancy Durham of Pickens. He
also leaves six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held
Saturday morning at 11 o'clock from Reedy River Baptist church.
The services will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Frank K.
Poole and the Rev. Archie Brickle. Interment will be made in the
church cemetery.

Sarah Prater (Pitts) Hertz
Mrs. Sarah Prater Hertz, 47, wife of Joe
Hertz, died Thursday at 6:30 a.m. in a Newark, N.J., hospital
after a brief illness.
Born in Oconee County, a daughter of the
late Augustus C. and Clara (Marchbanks) Prater, she had lived in
Newark for six years.
Mrs. Hertz was a member of Townville
Baptist Church in Oconee County.
Surviving also are two sons, Rev. James M.
Pitts of Wake Forest, N.C., and Don Pitts of Washington, D.C.;
four sisters, Mrs. Grady L. Green of Taylors, Mrs. Charles Dillard
of Charlotte, N.C., Mrs. N.R. Boggs of Clems
on and Mrs. Doyle McCollum of Greenville, and three brothers, W.A. (Bill) and C.E.
(Ed) Prater of Greenville and William Clinton Prater of Orlando,
Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday
at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary by Rev. W. Daniel Greer. Burial
will be in the Reedy River Baptist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Marchbanks,
Charles Marchbanks, E.H. Prater, Clarence Prater and Clifton
Prater.
The body is at the mortuary.

Ervin
Wilson Poole
Ervin Wilson Poole, 70, life-long resident
of Greenville county, died at 1:45 o'clock yesterday morning at a
local hospital following two days of illness. Mr. Poole, who
engaged in farming, was plowing at his home Friday when his plow
struck a rock, causing the handle to strike him in the abdomen,
and in the unusual accident he received injuries that proved
fatal. He was widely connected in the county and the many friends
of the family will sympathize with them in their sorrow.
Mr. Poole was a member of the Gap Creek
Baptist Church.
He is survived by five sons: James W.
Poole, of Lyman; J. E. Poole and Henry 0. Poole, of this city;
William Perry Poole and M. L. Poole, of Renfrew, and by the
following daughters: Mrs. H. L. Batson, Mrs. H. E. Batson, and
Mrs. Jack Roberts, all of Greenville; Mrs. Clinton Pittman, of
Tigerville; Mrs. Clyde Bradley, of Taylors; and Miss Thelma Poole,
of Lyman, and by one stepdaughter, Mrs. Genell Greer of this city.
He is also survived by three brothers,
Landrum Poole of Marietta, C. S. Poole of Greenville, and M. S.
Poole, of Greenville County, and by three sisters, Mrs. Mary
McClure, Tryon, N.C., Mrs. Thomas Mullinex of Locust Hill, and
Mrs. Monroe Evans of Greer.
In addition he is survived by 29
grandchildren and by four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held this
afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Reedy River Baptist Church conducted
by the Rev. R. R. Brady and the Rev. Roy G. Gowan and the body
will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Paul Batson, John
Evington, Marshal Mullinex, Clyde Bridwell, Earle Waldrop and
William Guest.
The following granddaughters will be the
flower girls: Misses Lois Batson, Ruth Batson, Edith Poole and
Beatrice McLemore.
The body will be at the residence of Mrs.
H. L. Batson, 140 Brooks Avenue, Union Bleachery until the hour of
the service.

Funeral services for Thomas
Ansel Poole, 15, son of E.W. Poole, whose death occurred at the
family home, 5 Morris street, American Spinning company, at a late
hour Thursday night following a two weeks' illness, will be held
this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Morgan Memorial Baptist church.
The services will be conducted by the Rev. J.M. Trogdon, who will
be assisted by the Rev. W.P. Hall and the Rev. J.E. Merchant, and
the interment will be made in the family plot in the Reedy River
Baptist church cemetery.
Young Mr. Poole was born and
reared in this city and was well known in the American Spinning
company community, where he attended school and was employed in
the mill during his spare time. He was a member of the Morgan
Memorial Baptist church. The death of this young man came as a
distinct shock to his many friends.
Mr. Poole is survived by his
father, E.W. Poole, and by the following sisters and brothers:
Mrs. H.L. Batson, Mrs. Slomie Pitman, Mrs. H.E. Batson, Mrs. Clyde
Bradley and Miss Sadie Poole, all of this city; James W. Poole, of
Lyman; Jonie E. Poole, Henry Poole, Perry Poole and M.L. Poole,
all of Greenville. One half-sister, Miss Thelma Poole, of
Greenville, also survives.

Mrs. Clara Marchbanks Prater, wife of A.C. Prater, died yesterday morning at
7:15 o'clock at the family residence, 217 Circle street,
Overbrook.
Mrs. Prater was a daughter of
the late John and Ester Boggs Marchbanks and had spent most of her
life in Oconee county near Seneca. For the past five years she had
made her home in Greenville and during her resident here had
endeared herself to many friends.
She was a member of the Baptist
church.
Surviving are her husband, A.C.
Prater; six daughters, Mrs. Roy Boggs, Calhoun; Mrs. Milton Pitts,
Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Grady L. Green, Greenville; Mrs. Doyle
McConnell, Easley; Misses Helen and Clara Bess Prater, Greenville;
four sons, W. Eugene Prater, Anderson; W. Clinton Prater and W.A.
Prater, Greenville; Edward Prater, Taylors, in addition to six
grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. E.M.
McGaha and Mrs. Carey Lemons, both of Easley; three brothers,
Claud and W.D. Marchbanks, Easley and Hovey Marchbanks, Travelers
Rest.
Funeral services will be
held from Reedy River Baptist Church this afternoon at 3:30
o'clock, the Rev. E.P.Driggers officiating. Interment will be in
the church cemetery.

Mrs. Prater will serve as pallbearers: Jay Prater, Lonnie Prater,
Jack Prater, Clarence Prater, Eustus Prater and R.B. Prater.

Lillian
Aletha Watkins Puckett, 84, of 200 Batson Drive, Berea community,
died June 26, 1995, at Anderson Area Medical Center following a
period of declining health.
Born in Columbia, she was a daughter
of the late Robert Coleman and Harriett Hadley Watkins and the
widow of Elbert James Puckett.
She was a member of Reedy River
Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher and a member of the
Mothers' Sunday School Class. She was a member of Order of
the Eastern Star.
Surviving are three daughters,
Katrina P. Cannon of Anderson, Iva P. Bracken of Greenville and
Mignon P. Beard of Aiken; two sisters, Dottie W. Lloyd of Columbia
and Bea W. Hill of Branchville; a brother, Robert Coleman Watkins
of Camden; a cousin raised in the home, Mae Lee of Columbia; eight
grandchildren, Ian Cannon, Blake Cannon, Nicole Bracken, Scott
Bracken, Clay Bracken, Aletha Beard Rushton, Amy Beard and Bryan
Spencer Beard Jr.; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Julia
Bracken and Cassidy Lillian Bracken.

Puckett
Elbert James Puckett, 83, of 200
Batson Drive, Berea community, died May 13, 1993, at his home
after several months of serious illness.
He was a retired superintendent of
weaving with Burlington Industries and United Merchants. He was
the former owner of E.J. Puckett's Valley Taxi Service in Aiken
and Augusta, Ga., former owner of Snow Cone Dairy-O in Bath, and
former owner of Old Ginn Trading Post and E.J. Puckett's Food
Vending in Greenville.
He was a National Guard veteran and a
member of Reedy River Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Aletha
Watkins Puckett; three daughters, Iva Puckett Bracken of
Greenville, Katrina Puckett Cannon of Anderson and Mignon Puckett
Beard of Aiken; two sisters, Lola Puckett Eskew of Walhalla and
Ruth Puckett English of Whitmire; and two brothers, Otis Puckett
of Whitmire and J.D. Puckett of Newberry.
Services: 4 p.m. Sunday at Reedy
River Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
